As we enter June, Beechwood Mortgages is honoured to continue our Year of Giving Back by announcing our newest charity partner: Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice Service.
Providing a vital lifeline to children with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions, this remarkable charity ensures that local families do not have to face their most difficult days alone.
A Journey Born from Personal Experience
The story of Alexander Devine is one of immense courage and profound love. The charity was founded in 2007 by John and Fiona Devine. Following their own deeply personal journey with their beloved son, Alexander, they realised a critical need: Berkshire desperately needed its own children’s hospice service.
John and Fiona established the charity to ensure that children like Alexander, and families like theirs, would always be able to access the specialist care and support they needed, closer to home.
How They Make a Difference
Alexander Devine provides a comprehensive circle of care, tailoring their approach to whatever a child and their family might need at any given time. Their invaluable services include:
Respite Care: Giving parents and carers a much-needed opportunity to take a break, safe in the knowledge that their child is having fun and being looked after by a trusted, specialist team, either at home or in the hospice.
Specialist Play: Their care team provides age-appropriate activities to stimulate and engage children. Play specialists also help children and their siblings cope with difficult feelings, running group days and sibling outings to foster friendships and peer support.
Symptom Management & End of Life Care: Working closely with the family, their Clinical Nurse Specialist and Doctor create individual symptom management plans. When the time comes, they provide compassionate end-of-life care, supporting the hopes and wishes of the family to help them make the decisions that are right for them.
Family & Bereavement Support: Understanding that every family is unique, they offer flexible support, from fun family activity days to dedicated counselling. In the saddest of times, they provide bereavement support, including memory work to help families commemorate their child and navigate their grief.
